Al Baculis Quintet—Quintet? Impossible! Surely we can hear several different reeds and a full string section. You can, but strictly through the medium of electronics. Al Baculis’ clarinet sound, besides being recorded live, is fed into a Maestro synthesizer which can produce a second clarinet, a bass clarinet, or a bassoon. Rudy Pontano’s electric piano also synthesizes a remarkably realistic string section sound which is used on all four cuts, and Tony Romandini’s guitar and John Lanza’s bass are amplified electrically. The only legitimate live sound is generated by Ronnie Page’s drums.
"Blues '75" and "Soul Search" were written for this session by Al Baculis; "Smile Please" is a Stevie Wonder creation which promises to become a pop standard while "Feel Like Makin’ Love" already is.
