Lorne Buck (and fellow band member, Dan Penny) were, according to this website, icons of the Canadian country and bluegrass scenes in the 1950s. It is hard to track down much information on either of them, though I did find that Lorne released a CD called Favourite Memories with The Backwoodsmen a few years back, and that he won a songwriting award in 2006 for his track Will You Remember Christmas.
As the liner notes explain, this album was an effort to reinvent the origins of bluegrass music, which was deeply based in spiritual and gospel music. To quote the liner notes:
Bluegrass Jam is proud of its place among the traditional Bluegrass bands, and performing in the Sunday morning gospel portion of the Bluegrass festivals is the highlight of our weekends during the summer. We hope you enjoy our efforts to share the joy of traditional Bluegrass gospel music.
Anyone keen on the immensely popular O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, who may want to find some more gospel-themed music, will find this LP a treat. The band is made up of Lorne Buck (guitar), Dave Harbin (mandolin), Bruce Dowd (banjo), Mickey Harbin (guitar), Tom McCreight (bass), and Dan Penny (fiddle).
I have selected two tracks for you to sample. When Jesus Comes Back, is a traditional sounding song, written by Mr. Buck. It has some great vocal harmonies. Another Buck original, For Thoe Who Believe, has a similar structure, but I really dig the mandolin work.
