He recorded his first album, "Chivalry Lives", in 1981, performing and producing it himself with spare instrumentation of solo piano, dulcimer and vocals, some recorded in the studio, some in concert. The songs were both personal and political: about nuclear proliferation and urban development gone mad to age of consent laws for gay people. Other Vancouver groups performed his songs and he sang at every major festival in western Canada as well as in countless benefits. After commenting on his ease on-stage, powerful voice and fresh songwriting style, reviewers were most struck by his openness in performing as a gay man. He was nominated for a West Coast Music Award which led to his opening for one of his favourite artists, Joan Armatrading, on two western tours.
