Canadian singer born in Drumheller, Alberta, on November 29, 1935, the eldest of a set of twins. She has two other sisters and three brothers, all of whom are talented singers. She received her education in East Coulee, Alberta, where she spent most of her early childhood. Much of her success is owed to her parents and, in particular her father Vernon Potts, whose guidance and training proved invaluable to Shirley in her early years. Her career started at an early age singing with her two sisters at various school functions, weddings, church socials and variety concerts.

The family eventually moved to Lethbridge, Alta and here, along with her sisters and a brother, she sang at many local functions. This ultimately led to the formation of a country group, the "Country Capers" which, along with Shirley Ann, was featured on CJOC Radio in Lethbridge for 6 years and appeared on CBC TV. Her husband Donn Petrak acted as her manager.
